VIDEO: Helping Her Son Prevail

Accredo provides specialized care, expertise and support to patients with chronic, complex conditions like pulmonary arterial hypertension. Here is John's story.
Susan Day’s life changed forever on the day her son, John, was born. Chronically and critically ill with a condition that at first was inexplicable, and three years later diagnosed as primary pulmonary hypertension (PAH), John required a level of care his family could not have anticipated. They needed help.
PAH, high blood pressure in the pulmonary artery to the lungs, is an incurable, progressive disease that causes shortness of breath and fatigue, and puts life-threatening strain on the heart. But John’s difficult diagnosis was tempered by his dramatic response to the right medication. Within two hours of his first treatment, he went from being a kid who couldn’t blow out the candles on his birthday cake, to sitting up, eating and laughing.
“This miracle medication had one problem,” Susan said. “I had to prepare it at home. … And I’m thinking, are you kidding me? One mistake, and I could kill him. It was that simple. Nobody should have to do that alone.”
Susan and her husband, George, are grateful for the care and support they receive from Accredo. From the day a nurse specialist arrived at their door to teach them how to prepare and administer John’s drugs, through the years to John’s recent 18th birthday and beyond, the care team has become part of the family. Together they’ve watched as John grew to being, as Susan put it, “the most courageous, bravest person in the world” who lives his life to the fullest.
