Treatment that is not evidenced based, therapy nonadherence and lack of visibility into medical utilization patterns and spend are driving up the cost of cancer care. The top 10 specialty drugs account for nearly 50% of spending on specialty medications, and cancer ranks third in cost contribution to specialty trend. According to the Express Scripts Drug Trend Report, the average cost of an oncology prescription in the pharmacy benefit today is 22 times higher than in 1997.
