Cystic fibrosis is a genetic lung disease causing thick sticky mucous to accumulate in the linings of the lungs, gut, and other membranes, affecting all areas of the body. Lung dysfunction is the most severe manifestation of CF. Living with the disease is a daily challenge, often requiring multiple doses of medication (some patients take up to 20 pills per day), nebulizer treatments, chest physiotherapy, and pancreatic enzyme supplements to improve the absorption of nutrients. Currently, there is no cure for cystic fibrosis, and patients face a lifetime of complex treatments to maintain lung functions. Survival has improved with the new treatments but still averages in the late 30s to early 40s.

To meet the complex care needs of CF patients, Accredo has expanded our best-in-class service to patients, caregivers, and prescribers with a new Therapeutic Resource Center. The CF TRC is staffed by a specialist team with deep knowledge of the disease state, experience with payer coverage of high-cost therapies, administration of complex copay assistance and foundation support programs, as well as an understanding of the best ways to support prescribers and patients.

The Clinical Difference

The CF TRC team is comprised of pharmacists, nurses, technicians, physician relationship ambassadors, and patient care advocates - all dedicated to CF patients.

From the moment patients contact our CF TRC, they receive a high-touch model of care. Our program allows our team to develop a rational approach to care and help patients and families navigate the complexities unique to CF, including medical device management, multi-patient households, and complex reimbursement requirements.

Leading the team's CF patient care services are our specialist pharmacists and nurses who are specially trained to identify drug interactions, help patients manage complex regimens, and aid them with daily CF care. Pharmacists are available 24/7.

Our Specialty Clinical Care Management program for CF not only focuses on ongoing disease and drug education, but also uses our proprietary predictive modeling to determine which patients are at highest risk of future gap in care so we can tailor our clinical support at the patient level.

An Accredo social worker is also available to assist patients and their families with common resources and other support needs.

Additionally, Accredo is one of only eight specialty pharmacies with access to all CF specialty drugs. This level of access enables the CF TRC to provide complete specialty regimen care and offers the convenience of interfacing with a single pharmacy for CF specialty medications for patients and clinics.

Several new CF therapies are on the horizon, and we are well prepared to support our patients as these new medicines become available.

Our unique TRC model provides a comprehensive solution to support this complex disease state. It also promotes relationship building with patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers. As a result of this new TRC, one of our healthcare providers remarked, "I consider you part of my team."

Enhancing the level of care for CF patients and improving the treatment experience for both patients and prescribers is not only our priority, but also our privilege.
