This Thursday, all eyes will be focused on Washington D.C., where the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Political pundits have game-played nearly every possible outcome for the healthcare reform bill – a spectrum that includes the entire law remaining intact, the entire law being thrown out, and a wide variety of compromise scenarios where part of the bill is struck down but other aspects survive.
It’s great theater, and the ruling will have clear consequences for patients, doctors and insurers, as well as both major political parties.
But when the dust settles, how much will change for Express Scripts?
To be honest, probably not much.
Express Scripts’ mission is to improve health outcomes for patients while driving waste out of the healthcare system. For almost three decades, we have been making the use of prescription drugs safer and more affordable for millions of Americans, and we will continue to do so regardless of what the Supreme Court announces this week.
Our recent merger with Medco has given us the best-in-class clinical expertise to only further our mission. We’re closing gaps in care, we’re driving toward greater medication adherence, and we’re leading the fight against pharmacy fraud, waste and abuse.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or a Democrat, if you’re in favor of this bill or against it. You likely can agree that the country needs to be getting more return on its healthcare investment than we what currently experience. Despite being home to many of the leading medical institutions and pharmaceutical innovations, the United States still lags behind many other countries in terms of health outcomes. At Express Scripts, we agree that the country can do better, and we’re committed to doing our part.
We recognize the complexity of the healthcare environment. Starting Thursday, we will partner with our clients to review the ruling and determine the best course of action going forward.
No matter what regulatory changes occur, we will be nimble and responsive to client and member needs, working to lower costs, drive out waste and improve patient health.
